Production-scale reactor systems are mainly used as process equipment for pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing. These systems consist of glass-lined reactors and distillation overheads made of borosilicate glass and are always specifically engineered according to customers’ specifications.
The distillation overhead is typically composed of a vapor duct, heat exchangers, feeders and receivers as well as connecting piping.
Feeders and receivers are made of glass for smaller volumes and of glass-lined steel for larger setups. Two different types of heat exchangers are typically used: spiral condenser (glass) and shell and tube heat exchangers. Shell and tube type heat exchangers are built with inner tubes made of borosilicate glass, glass-lined steel, silicon carbide (SiC), tantalum or other metals, depending on process parameters and other requirements.
The design varies between multi-purpose product / process specific setups. These apparatus can be operated at full vacuum and low pressure. A broad range of chemical reactions can be performed and a large variety of chemicals can be processed, thanks to the highly corrosion resistant materials in contact with the process media.
Typical applications:
- Chemical synthesis
- Extraction / evaporation
- Crystallization
- Separation
- Vacuum distillation / reflux distillation
- Rectification
- API manufacturing
- Peptide synthesis
- Fine chemical production
- Solvent recovery
